Abstract

The emergence of natural gas as a non-pollutant and cheap energy gives to this one a strategic resource position nationally and internationally. In Algeria, natural gas is the object of a developing strategy designed by the authorities aiming at assuring the long-term appropriateness between recoverable proved reserves and projected demand. This concern resulted in the definition of a framework whose principles would push for the most available forms of energy, natural gas as a priority, and promote the mastery of the energy usage as well as environment protection. The national energy policy sanctions, through the national consumption model, natural gas as the main factor of a sustainable economic development :First, through a preferential usage of natural gas for the domestic needs given the reserve appropriateness; second, throughthe contribution to the country’s economic and social development thanks to the revenue generated by the export. Natural gas transportation-relating problem represents a curb to its international trading growth. Natural gas is carried eitherby gas pipelines or in the form of compressed gas or by means of methan tankers in liquid state after liquefaction. It also can be transformed by chemical conversion. Natural gas has a direct effect on the economic growth and regional balances. In terms of growth, natural gas is regarded as an inputfound practically in all industries as well as in populations’ daily life, requiring consequently an infallible provision, which is itself dependant on the gas transportation and supply. In terms of regional balances, it is the gas supplier-consumer relationship at regional level which requires a reliable transportation system. It is within this general background that we examine in this paper the importance of Algerian gas pipelines in supplying Europe with natural gas as well as their part in alleviating the energy tension undergone by Europe in order to ensure its energy security.
