Abstract
This dissertation is a study of the hippie counterculture phenomenon in the United States in terms
of examining social and cultural circumstances that contributed to intensifying youth grievances.
The research also sheds light on the changing realities of post WWII America. First, dissertation
casts light on the retraction of the authoritative household environment while consequently
attributing the counterculture adventurous nature to this particular shift. Secondly, it examines the
fascism of the technocratic society. Thirdly, it posits the difference of cultural perspectives as a
viable cause of cultural discontinuity among generations. The study also attempts to delineate the
social and cultural configurations in the shape of opening up to new perspectives regarding
sexuality, drugs, spirituality, and communal experience. These new heights that have been
discovered, were at first just a mean to express discontent of the wretched reality.
