Investigating reading practices would normally require a series of observations to be made on the books, their design, editing, sales and criticism. The examination of this whole mechanism usually helps to understand that a literary production can be called a masterpiece and becomes a best-seller, but also allows us to understand that a novel passes unnoticed and is shunned by criticism and consequently By the readers. In this article and at this level of questioning, we will deal with the Algerian reader and his investment in his reading, which draws him towards this or that other reading and how it becomes the unique practice of reading. We will look at the reception of the novel written in French by an Algerian author that we compare to the reading of a novel written in French by a foreign author. It will be a question of the referential commitments but also thematic of the readers. For this purpose, we will detail the specific socio-demographic characteristics of each reader. We shall see that at the level of the Algerian reader; The reading of the national novel in comparison with the reading of a foreign novel will be taken as a revealing element of a tendency toward self-expression rather than an understanding of the meaning intended to be given by the 'author. It is not primarily based on taking into account the commercial or critical notoriety of this or that other novel.en_US
