Abstract
Abstract
Cultivating critical reading skills in learners has become very crucial for success in
higher education. Despite this, the majority of students at university level prioritize the
decoding of written symbols over the active analysis of the implied meaning. Reading
without being critical has turned EFL learners into passive receivers of knowledge.
Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the critical readers' kit by determining
what implements a critical reader should possess to achieve fulfillment. It also
investigates the necessary reading strategies students can develop, and the teacher’s role
in developing students’ critical reading abilities during reading sessions. To answer the
research questions, a case study was undertaken at Mohamed Boudiaf University of
M'sila, adopting students' questionnaire and EFL teachers' questionnaire as a data
collection instruments. The finding showed that both EFL learners and their teachers
have not yet discovered the critical reader's toolkit since they are not virtually familiar
with the necessary implements and strategies that need to be adopted in order to
transform passive readers into active critical readers. However, fostering critical readers
is not an easy task as there are some potential obstacles and challenges that a reader
might encounter. Consequently, some recommendations were presented to enable EFL
learners to overcome these obstacles, and to direct teachers' focus toward the
enhancement of critical thinking skills and critical reading strategies. Thus, this will not
only prepare EFL learners to be better critical readers at universities ,but we also hope
we could produce successful individuals who could survive in the real world
