Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of civil society in promoting participatory democracy in Algeria between 2019 and 2023, in the context of popular protests and political reforms. Algeria has experienced significant transformations characterized by active civil society engagement and the adoption of the 2020 Constitution, which enhanced public participation in decision-making. The research examines the impact of this constitution in establishing principles of participatory democracy by guaranteeing civil rights and freedoms. The study also reviews the role of the National Observatory for Participatory Democracy in monitoring policies and enhancing transparency and accountability, as well as the role of the Higher Council for Youth in encouraging youth participation in political and social life. The research demonstrates that these institutions have contributed to increasing political awareness and activating the role of citizens in the democratic process. The study concludes that the constitutional reforms during this period have laid a strong foundation for enhancing participatory democracy
