Abstract
This study belongs to the biological studies framework, about the biological activity of
phytochemical secondary metabolites, which depend on laboratory work to obtain results that
reflect the extent of the existence of these biological activities and their effectiveness in
plants. Our study is a ring in the chain of biological activity of date palm mainly about the
antioxidant activity through the quantification of phenolic compounds in two solvent systems
and measuring the value of this activity using the DPPH° scavenging assay in Deglet Nour
and Ghars varieties.
Through the quantification of phenolic compounds results we reached to: Firstly, the
phenolic compound quantity in date palm leaves varieties is affected by the geographical area,
that we have found the highest value of phenolic compounds in MeOH/H2O extract of DNM
sample (DN variety). Secondly, the amount of phenolic compounds in date palm leaves
varieties is affected by the variety; we have found the highest value of phenolic compounds in
the GH variety of the Methanolic extract. Finely, the amount of phenolic compounds differs
according to the extraction system in all varieties.
Through the determination of antioxidant activity we reached: Firstly, the both
varieties of date palm showed an antioxidant activity. Secondly, the value of the antioxidant
activity of date palm leaves varieties is affected by the geographical area, we have reported
the highest value in the Methanolic extract of DNT sample (DN variety), and this confirms
the first hypothesis. Thirdly, the value of the antioxidant activity of date palm leaves varieties
is affected by the variety where we have found the highest one in the GH variety of the
Methanolic extract, and this confirms the second hypothesis. Then, the extraction system
effects of the antioxidant activity in all studied varieties, and this confirms the third
hypothesis. Finally, there are relationship and correlation between the total phenolic content
and antioxidant activity in date palm leaves, and this confirms the fourth hypothesis.
Through our study, we have established a set of recommendations concerning both the
academic and the applied side, as follow:
Concentrate on the clarification of chemical concepts related to biological activities.
The botanical study of local date palm varieties.
Interest in study the biological activity of date palm in its various botanical parts.
Insertion of date palm leaves into alternative medicinal recipes.
Attention of updating methods for separating and purifying phenolic compounds to
precisely determine the most effective compounds in the antioxidant activity.
We propose for the future studies some prospects and topics which came as an extension
of our study and to compensate for the deficiencies of it and repair it:
